My name is Joe. For most of my life, I’ve suffered from chronic depression — but for years I put up a facade, too ashamed to share my struggles because of the stigma associated with mental health issues. When I was finally able to open up, it was because I began to tell my story and, in turn, hear those of the people around me. I realized I wasn’t alone, and I wanted to help others feel the same way.

I launched Backstory Backpacks to do just that. We make quality, affordable bags: for every one sold, we donate a minimum of 5% to mental health charities. For me, backpacks are the perfect metaphor for the stories we carry inside, hidden from those around us. By sharing those stories and raising awareness, we believe we can create a movement of positive change.
